Today, many industrial and commercial organizations are seeking ways to display their concern for the environment. Establishing and implementing a policy to use high-efficiency motors is one way to demonstrate environmental concern (and, at the same time, save energy and money).

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the NEMA Premium™ motor program could save 5,800 gWh of electricity and keep nearly 80 million metric tons of carbon out of the atmosphere over the next 10 years. That is equivalent to taking 16 million cars off the road.

Motors

The investment is straightforward: install electric motors having the highest electrical energy efficiency commensurate with your needs. Energy-efficient motors pay for themselves in a few years or sometimes even a few months, after which they will continue to pile up savings worth many times their purchase cost for as long as they remain in service. It goes without saying that more-efficient motors will consume less energy and reduce electric bills.

Drives

An adjustable frequency drive with a NEMA Premium™ efficiency motor can significantly reduce total energy cost. Drives optimize the power consumption and maximize the energy savings of the complete system. Drives allow for a complete system approach, rather than focusing only on reducing motor energy consumption. Refrigertation

Using field-proven variable speed technology ECM Evaporator fan motors can offer 40% -70% savings over Permanent Split Capacitor motors and inefficient Shaded-Pole motors. An estimated 41% of restaurants, convenience and grocery stores energy bill is from refrigeration.

Electric motors account for about 60% of the power used in U.S. industrial buildings. The figure is closer to 50% in commercial structures. It is a capital investment that can repay many times its original value over the next 20 years. At the same time, this investment can improve equipment reliability, reduce downtime and repair costs, and result in lower releases of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.
